the trip finished, the journey's just begun.
So, with one voice post to account for, that whole "updates from the road" thing worked out real well, huh?
At any rate, I'm back in Los Angeles after an exhilirating, exhausting, and--dare I say?--life-changing two weeks. The bus? He didn't make it back...at least not yet. We got an interesting offer from the owner of the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, NM--one of the most famous spots along Route 66--to put the bus on display for all the tourists to see and sign. So, if you should happen to pass through Tucumcari, stop by and see my bus, a Route 66 legend-in-the-making!
It was a difficult decision to leave the bus behind, especially since I was quickly acquiring the knowledge needed to diagnose and fix engine problems (and believe you me, with 5 or 6 breakdowns in the 9-day span, I learned a lot about engine problems in a hurry). But with time running out, Charlie and I wanted to do the rest of the trip right rather than just blow by all the great spots from Tucumcari to LA.
But don't worry: I'll be back eventually to pick up the Croc and complete its pilgrimage to LA.
There were surprising twists every step along the way; amazing and fascinating people we met along the way who became good friends; unbelievable moments of absurdity (I came within 11 ounces of finishing off a 72 oz. steak in Amarillo); and all-around, the beginning of a really exciting journey for all involved.
Austin put up some videos for you to peruse, and we already have two news articles published about the trip (the second link requires free registration). Check 'em out and let me know what you think.
