One step closer! (no, this isn't about what you think it is)
Today, I made an amazing discovery, one that gives me hope for the future of Iraq as we know it:

That's right; Iraqi Dew. Old school Dew, to be sure, but regardless: it's one step closer to finding Code Red here!! (And, I should add, one step closer to an unavoidable trip to the dentist here.)

Also, because I'm the biggest nerd ever, I've decided to translate "Do the Dew" into Kurdish for you (you lucky readers, you!): "Diweke bike."

Moments after the Dew discovery, I traipsed over to a nearby bakery on the main drag. Boy, did I luck out! I showed up moments after the bread had been taken out of the oven; the stuff was unbelievably good. I bought it at 4:20, so now I have a legitimate reason--albeit different than most others'--for remembering that time.

...

Other things I'm thankful for this evening:

Due to the snow two weeks back, we've been getting 12-14 hours of electricity a day now (they run hydroelectric plants here, so more snow = more water = more power). Can I tell you just how happy that makes me? No, no I can't.

Also, tonight we finally got the router in our house completely set up, so internet speeds have been sooooo much faster today. (Why, it almost passes for "high speed access." Almost.) We used Skype tonight for our weekly teleconference with the home office in Nashville, and that worked like a charm (if you want my Skype name, just ask).

Tomorrow I take on yet another duty at the school, but one that I'm extremely excited about: teaching music classes. Extremely excited. I've got a box of recorders sitting next to me, and I'm pretty sure we can have some fun with those. Let's see if I can come up with a decent Kurdish version of the "Every Good Boy Does Fine" mnemonic, huh?

Oh, and yeah, tomorrow I hit that big quarter-century mark. I suppose I'll have something maudlin to say about it tomorrow...but truth be told, right now I feel like I'd just as soon let this particular 2/28 go quietly into the night. Maybe that's just the exhaustion talking. We'll see.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (before I forget!)

hey Dave,

Before I forget, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I sent a package to your parents, so hopefully that should get to you soon. And you need to let go of finding Code Red dude- isn't plain old Dew enough?? :)

Good luck with the mouse problem. I have actually been waging a war of attrition with the roaches in our appartment. Hopefully the multiple set of traps by their hiding place should hand me a victory, until those pesky things regroup (I don't know for sure, but they seem to be coming from downstairs). I also had a dream the other night that we had a giant roach (the size of a jack russel terrier) as a pet. They're getting to me, man!

MUSIC CLASSES????!!!! Awww . . . I'm turning green! How would they feel about starting a string orchestra?

First thing's first, Mary...I gotta get 'em to learn the difference between a treble clef and cleft chin first!

But we'll be starting with the recorders pretty soon, and then we'll be all set for you to come over and set up a string orchestra! That would be pretty awesome!

Awesome it would be! Qualified to do so, I fear I am not! *Said in best Yoda voice which is not very good*

I am hoping to get to Guatemala sometime within the next year or so for a similar kind of thing, but would be touring with a string quartet and working with string programs that have been pre-established in the schools. I can't wait to hug my kids again!! But if you guys ever DO need a(nother) music teacher . . .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (ditto)

Dave,

Quarter century isn't bad. That's the year when one's car insurance premium is supposed to drop significantly! They must figure that if you made it that far, you must be a pretty good driver.

So enjoy a Happy Birthday in good ol' Suley. Sip a Diweke and toast the One in Whose time everything is just right.

Say, Thom's giant roaches reminds me of that bizarre Kafka story!

Love and Blessings, Doug

Happy Birthday, Dave. As a gift to you, I'd like to share a conversation I had with my girlfriend that I think will warm the cockles of your heart.

HER: (as R.E.M.'s "Losing my Religion" plays on the radio) "Who is this?"

ME: R.E.M.

HER: R.E.M.?......Never heard of them.

ME: (Beams proudly)

I have girls saying that to me all the time, Quincy. I just assumed they were playing dumb so that they could hear me go on and on incessantly and obsessively about all the minute details of three (formerly four) men's lives. And then they would swoon.

At least that's how the scenario plays out in my head.

Anyway, thanks for the birthday cheer.

Happy Birthday David

Hi David,
Just a quick note to say that we are thinking about you and praying for you. We are glad that you are updating your journal so we can learn about what you are doing in Iraq. I guess that this is kind of a milestone birthday, yes? I've got one this year too in May -- just add 20 years to your milestone! We are starting to plan our summer and we will probably be visiting Minnesota in August. Deanna is going to Russian camp in MN in July - traveling by herself on an airplane for the first time (with a chaperone of course at 11). It was really great this weekend, we had a choir festival at church and many choirs participated with about 260 singers. What a sound! Take care, love, Aunt Karen, Uncle Roger, Deanna and Derek

Nice read...

I've got friends in a rather metropolitan town in northern Iraq (if you can call it that)...sounds a lot like where you are, and it sounds like they get into a lot of the same hijinks you do, and express a lot of the same feelings you do! And seriously, my boyfriend there would totally try brain stew at least once, despite the fact that he's been "sick" more than once since being there. How could you pass up brain stew? I mean, how could HE pass up brain stew? Awesome - keep up the work you're doing. He'll be there for another two and a half months, then he's heading home for a while; then we're both coming back with a friend for a few years. If you're still there when we get back - maybe we'll meet up for some stew?!

haha... (Barf) hahaha...

Just curious...how did you stumble across this goofy ol' blog?

Oh - long story short...my boyfriend had sent a phrase to me in Kurdish. I was trying to google a dictionary specific to the area where you are to figure it out and in doing so found this (never did find the dictionary).

Anyway, I sent the link to him so he could see someone in a "similiar situtaion," and said, "HEY! I know this guy!," and "HEY! I was at his birthday party," and "HEY! You wanna see a hiliarious video of this guy dancing at his party!"

I'll have to tell you if you're really as funny as your blog sounds after I see the video! I feel a little bit like a stalker at this point...but whateva!

Yeah - the video is funny! Exactly the sort of thing we'd sit around doing at a birthday party at home! The "Sprinkler" in particular - we were just talking about how that move was lacking at a party a few weeks ago because my guy wasn't there to execute it in all its glory! hahaha...

too funny... keep it up...
