An exchange from this weekend:
Me: Thanks for having us over for lunch! It'll be good to have you over next week...hopefully the rats will be gone by then.

Guy from other missionary group: Yeah, it was good having you guys over. Maybe by the next time you come over, we'll have a toilet.

...

It's definitely been a war this weekend. Humans v. Rodents. We plugged up the hole through which they were clearly getting into the house. We also set up some traps this morning, and ended up catching another one of them; this was good, but it begs the question: how are they still getting in? We thought we'd chased 'em all out of the house.

Internet has been down all weekend, which added to an overall sense of frustration. Thankfully it's back up today!

Tomorrow marks our one-month anniversary of being in Iraq. It's hard to believe it's gone by so quickly!

(Yeah, yeah, yeah...tomorrow also happens to be Singles Awareness Day, err, Valentine's Day. They like to celebrate it here, but it's certainly not as big a deal as it is Stateside. And for that, I am thankful.)

Singles Awareness Day

Hey, Dave, thanks for heightening my awareness and thereby my sensitivity towards those whom this day is--well a humbug! Being middle aged and married has kept me out of the other half's loop.

Valentine's Day, of course, has nothing to do with St. Valentine who was an early Christian martyr whose feast day is Feb. 14th. It's origins, as far as I can tell, are rooted in the medieval French & English libido. Check out Chaucer's take on the date as cited in an online Catholic encyclopedia: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15254a.htm

May your S.A.D. be a happy one in spite of our culture's hoopla! Hey I really grossed them out at church with teh rat tale. Diggin out of the record-breaking Blizzard of '06, Doug

Re: Singles Awareness Day

Thanks for the link and the real dirt on V-Day. You'll notice I just wrote a bad haiku in honor of St. Valentine, but I'll keep it posted, regardless of the historical inaccuracy!

You know, my folks told me about the blizzard when I talked to them yesterday. Of course, it made me homesick for NYC. As with the transit strike, I'm actually quite disappointed I had to miss another big New York event!
