torsty:
Is it just me, or does the thunder sound different here?
I'm serious. I've heard a lot of thunder in the past week, as it's been raining like you wouldn't believe (last Friday the rains caused some bad flooding in some of the outlying villages. People actually had to evacuate their houses). And I'm telling you: the thunder here actually sounds different from thunder in the States. The thunder I'm used to hearing has either a distinctive cracking or rumbling sound. Here? It's more of a prolonged booming sound. It actually sounds like a series of explosions. It's loud, ferocious, and often shakes our house a good deal. Last night, for example, I kept waking up throughout, my heart racing, as the thunder I kept hearing sounded like bombs going off somewhere nearby (and it seemed like it was right outside my window).

Then again, all of this could be due to the fact that I'm always half-asleep when the serious thunder comes to town, and my over-active imagination likes to play mean tricks on me. Jerk.

(You'll notice I'm getting paranoid about this.)

I'm jealous. As a connoisseur of thunderstorms, I would love to spend one stormy night in Suleimaniya to sample the sights and sounds of your exotic meteorological displays! Doug

Re: thunder

I know you are, and I wish you could spend a stormy night here to witness what I believe to be some peculiar thunder/lightning.

Though, I was thinking about this yesterday, and it occured to me: I have a large enclosed balcony right in front of my bedroom window, and perhaps the thunder is reverberating inside this balcony, which would account for the prolonged/boomy sound.

Ah, nothing like reverberation! Just the inside of a guitar. :-) D.
